Hands-On... Printmaking Inspired by Hiroshige's 100 Famous Views of Edo
We present to you, Hands-On . . . Printmaking!
To this day, Utagawa Hiroshige is considered to be the last great master of traditional woodblock printmaking. Inspired by the master’s series from our collection, which is on display now for the first time in 24 years as well as our long-standing tradition of getting “hands-on” with art, this series is for all our DIY-ers and not-afraid-to-try-ers.
In this episode, Sato Yamamoto walks us through the essential steps that go into woodblock printmaking using the following materials:
What You’ll Need:
Brayer or a wine bottle / rolling pin
Paper towels
Mat or cardboard for cutting and rolling
Aluminum foil to prevent ink transfer
Baren or a wooden spoon / spatula
A linocut block
Paint
A carving tool / razor
Watercolor paper
We want to see what you make! Tag us (@brooklynmuseum) to share your creations.

I was rather baffled by the square map of edo at the start of the exhibit being mounted with the text of the key not reading properly. It is mounted as if read left to right but you can see the characters are all written in the traditional up to down. But perhaps I overlooked something that drove an intentional decision That said I lovedddd this exhibit. Being able to see all 100 up close was a rare treat in and of itself. Then you get to see Murakami’s recreations even larger for you to enjoy. He also goes a step further for a few that are printed extra big (wall size) and adds his own tiny murakami character to a handful or so of them, making you have to look even more closely than some might normally. Genius.

1974 , Bedford ave near Eastern parkway: a lady, butt naked , ran out down the street from a Brownstone apartment building. She was frantically holding onto the handle of a police vehicle that happened to be waiting for the light to turn green at the corner of St John street. She pounded on the window , all the while screaming and hollering for help as the man who was chasing her hesitated abruptly to proceed . The vehicle sped away from the scene , leaving the woman to helplessly fend for herself. The man grabbed her by the hair and escorted his naked possession, up those Brownstone stairs into the building.

In sincere recognition to your obvious contributions: "Jewish women played a significant role in all aspects of the American feminist movement, advocating for women’s suffrage, birth control and reproductive rights, peace, improved conditions for working women, the Equal Rights Amendment, and gender equality. In the early and mid-1960s, Jewish women-including Betty Friedan, Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, and Letty Cottin Pogrebin-helped to launch second-wave feminism. Many younger Jewish women pioneered radical feminism later in the decade. In some women's liberation collectives, as many as two-thirds to three-quarters of members were Jewish".

I'm all for black and proud for sure, black is definitely beautiful. But technically both swizz and Alicia are bi-racial black or multi-racial black (meaning mixed or black and another race) but all of their paintings seem to just be of fully black individuals. All I'm saying is don't forget about yourself. Being multi-racial black is a wonderful thing too. Cuz at the end of the day lets remember and keep it real, when your a mixed black individual, you will never be black enough for the black culture and you will never be white enough for the white culture, or Hispanic, Asian, native American, etc... So lets shine a light on our own culture of being multi-racial black as well. That's all I'm saying.
